When Doreen and Peter Wright promise guests an "idyllic retreat in tranquil surroundings", rest assured that this is exactly what you'll find at Makuti Lodge - a glorious sanctuary set against the magnificent mountainscape of Hout Bay, one of Cape Town's most popular destinations for both local and international visitors.

Makuti Lodge offers 4 self-catering cottages set in a beautiful, natural Fynbos garden with each providing wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. These charming cottages are tastefully decorated and fully equipped to make your stay entirely hassle-free and comfortable. They each have their own private gardens and patio areas, complete with outdoor furniture and easy access to the swimming pool.

Upon our arrival at the Lodge, we were warmly greeted by Doreen and Peter and shown to our accommodation, "Cedar Cottage". The cottage had a wonderful fireplace with all firewood provided, along with a TV, video machine, stereo system and private telephone (as do all the cottages.) Our accommodation was in 2 double bedrooms with the main bedroom en-suite with shower and a separate family bathroom with bath and shower. The lounge area was extremely spacious, with an adjacent open plan dining room and French doors leading out onto the patio. The kitchen was completely kitted out with everything we needed to prepare meals, including a gas stove, a microwave oven, large refrigerator/freezer and a coffee machine. Everything is thoughtfully provided for at Makuti Lodge - right down to an array of herbs and spices and complimentary bottles of wine!

After settling in, the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring and playing in the extensive gardens at the Lodge. Later that evening, we decided to follow Doreen's recommendation and take the short drive through the beautiful valley for dinner at one of Hout Bay's most popular restaurants, Papino's. The children enjoyed delicious pizzas and I can highly recommend the Hollandse Biefstuk!

After a most restful night's sleep, we enjoyed our breakfast, drank in the peaceful scenery and then sadly had to pack up and say goodbye to our hosts.

Makuti Lodge truly offers a "tranquil retreat in the clouds." Doreen and Peter have created a magical haven in the mountains and I would not hesitate to return for some more (much needed) rest and relaxation!
